Ski Patrol

Situation

Ski Patrol and Winter Sports Emergency Response Teams work in some of the toughest conditions possible. They are tasked with providing the highest possible level of rescue services to Skiers, Snowboarders and people enjoying many other snow and winter sports.

Teams are highly skilled and must have an extensive knowledge of the mountain they patrol as well as the large variety of incident the harsh climate creates. Responders are often trained in dealing with Avalanche Search and Rescue and many other very specialised techniques tailored to deal with what the harsh environment can offer.

Complications

The responders job is made difficult by the complex rescues the terrain creates, problems occur as incidents can often happen in low visibility over a large demanding terrain making people hard to pick out in the monotonous landscape. Secondly responses are made even more difficult by the decreased survival time caused by the intense cold, as responders have a small window in which to find the patient before hypothermia sets in. Teams often struggle with getting the right people on scene due to team size, area covered, outdated call-out methods and the large variety of training levels within a team.

Taskings can vary immensely, making it extraordinarily difficult to always be prepared for the unexpected, making training and qualification tracking a very important and equally difficult exercise.
